Imam Zaid Shakir is a co-founder, Board of Trustees, and Faculty member of Zaytuna College in Berkeley, CA.

As Imam of Masjid Al-Islam in New Haven, CT from 1988 to 1994 he spearheaded a community renewal and grassroots anti-drug efforts. For seven years in Syria, and briefly in Morocco, Shakir immersed himself in an intense study of Arabic, Islamic law, Quranic studies, and spirituality with prominent Muslim scholars. In 2001, he became the first American to graduate with a BA in Islamic Sciences from Syria’s prestigious Abu Noor University.

Imam Zaid is a co-founder of United For Change, and the Lighthouse Mosque in Oakland, CA. As a gifted author and lecturer, he has also authored numerous articles, and translated several classical religious Arabic texts into modern English. Imam Zaid currently resides in Northern California with his family.
